Conservation-Inspired Jewelry from Costa Rica

Conservation Started with Connection

My dream of visiting a rainforest began when I was a child. I carried a rainforest book everywhere with me and loved learning about rainforest animals. I remember telling my mom that one day I would go there. Honestly, I do not think she took a 9-year-old very seriously — but years later, I made that dream come true with my best friend and husband, Nicolas.

We planned our trip to Costa Rica for almost two years before finally setting out on the adventure. It was there that I truly began to understand and appreciate the biodiversity of the rainforest. From monkeys and sloths to toucans, frogs, butterflies, snakes, and incredible plant life, the rainforest felt alive in every direction.

One guide especially left a lasting impact on me. He explained how every living thing — even the smallest bee plays an important role in the ecosystem. He taught us about wildlife, plants, and how deeply connected nature truly is. There were sanctuaries where injured monkeys, sloths, and other animals were being rehabilitated and cared for, which deeply inspired me.

That trip changed me forever. After returning from Costa Rica, I eventually worked at a monkey sanctuary helping care for rescued capuchin monkeys, the same kind I had seen in the rainforest.

Over time, every experience and stepping stone eventually led me here — to Reefcaya. From 13 years as a professional repair jeweler to learning about conservation in Costa Rica, each chapter shaped the path I’m on today. Now, I create eco-friendly jewelry from invasive Asian green mussels, transforming them into conservation-inspired pieces. It feels like finally putting what I’ve learned into action. Deep down, I truly believe this is part of my purpose.
